This site exists because I don’t get out enough. I don’t have enough interesting conversations. Remember the long philosophical debates you used to have as an undergrad? Why do we let traffic conditions and domestic chores replace them as we get older?
I’m interested in complexity: how it manifests and how we deal with it. Enduring issues and the implications of little decisions we make every day. The things beyond our immediate control that lead us to make those choices. We have all kinds of specialist knowledge; I think we spend too little time reflecting on how we use it.
I’m intrigued by culture and how it colours our perception of the world. I’ve studied everything from physics to medieval German literature … just because it was interesting. I’ve worked in telecommunications and on environmental policy; I’ve managed teams in central and local government. The internal dynamics of organisations are pretty interesting, too.
Some of my writing is inspired by travel—but you won’t find long-winded accounts of where I went and what I had for lunch each day. You will find a series of ideas triggered by spending time in a different place.
Some of my writing is about public policy—but you won’t find soapboxes, sweeping generalisations, or bureaucratese. (If you do, tell me and I’ll expunge them!) I’m not a politician; I won’t try to tell you what to think. I have more questions than answers.
Some of my writing's just about life. Mostly, it’s personal reflection with some analysis mixed in. It’s consciously wide-ranging, focusing on the broader picture.
You're probably a busy person. You probably see enough ranting on the internet already. Why should you care what I think?
You might just enjoy the way I write, content be damned. Ten minutes’ distraction from the chores or your kids. That’s fine with me.
I hope, though, that you’ll find I connect things in interesting ways. I'll keep it brief: quick to read, something to ponder.
Stimulus for your own thoughts. Perhaps even a philosophical debate or two.
